Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services
What is Psychosocial Rehabilitation?
PSR programs are designed to improve the lives of youth in transition to adulthood by giving them the emotional, cognitive, social skills, and other life skills needed to live and work in their communities as independently as possible.
Why PSR?
Youth who are transitioning to adulthood need to have well-developed self-esteem and self-efficacy skills that equip them to manage relationships in multiple adult contexts. Often, youth in the foster care system have lived through multiple traumas and disruptive events by the time they begin their transition to adulthood. Brain development is still very vulnerable at this stage of life. Youth transitioning to adulthood without adequate life skills and mentors have an increased risk of homelessness, unemployment, and involvement with the criminal justice system.
How PSR Helps
Empowerment: Everyone should feel they can set their own goals and they learn they have the power and autonomy to pursue those aims.
Hope: Foster youth in transition to adulthood often feel demoralized even in ways they don’t fully understand. PSR aims to reframe such perceptions and feel hopeful about the future.
Skill Development: PSR endeavors to teach people skills to help them start from where they are and learn to live the life they want to live. This includes life skills, work skills, social skills, and others.
Support: Trained PSR staff offer support and help individuals build relationships and social connections throughout various aspects of their lives.
